It is easy to rejoice when things are going our way, isn’t it? But, what about the times when trouble comes, or disappointment and discouragement?
The Scripture tells us to rejoice, no matter what happens. It is not that we are glad when bad things come our way. Yet, there is a powerful truth found by rejoicing in all circumstances. However, the way the apostle, Paul, puts it lets us know it is not always easy to do.
Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!
Philippians 4:4
Reading Psalm 16 recently brought to my attention several benefits we can glean from rejoicing.
Rejoicing Brings Instruction
Verse 7 tells us that rejoicing brings instruction to our lives.
I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel;
My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. Ps 16:7
Clarity comes when we rejoice. Because we have set aside worry, we can hear the voice of the Lord in the climate of peace that comes from rejoicing. We open ourselves to the revelation He may give us directly or through dreams. But, there is more.
Rejoicing Brings Stability
I have set the Lord always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved.
Therefore, my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
Ps 16:8,9
How can we not rejoice if we are always gazing at the Lord! Keeping Him involved in everything we do brings a special joy. Knowing that we are fulfilling the purpose for which He created us is deeply satisfying. When we fix our eyes on Him, a sense of stability pervades every task.
Rejoicing Brings Vision for the Future
Finally, in verse 11 David writes the following:
You will show me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Ps 16:11
Since we were created for a divine purpose, tapping into that pathway brings the ultimate joy. Rejoicing despite difficulties that come our way is easy if our focus is on the Lord. He will give us glimpses into our futures as we look to Him.
It is a wonderful cycle, for as we rejoice, we see more clearly. Then, as we pursue the revealed way, the joy increases. The ultimate joy is “in His presence.” During these troubled times, let us all the more seek quiet times with the Lord. Our destinies depend upon it!
