Proverbs 11:1 says “A false balance is abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.”
In Bible times, weights were used to balance grain, silver and gold to determine what to charge the buyer. Of course, cheaters found ways to take advantage with manipulation of the weights to gain greater profit.
We might think this is just a historical point –not pertaining to us. But, think about it.
Is it possible that we have a balance in our minds using differing weights for every occasion?
How about this. Do we treat everyone the same in our hearts? Is there one who irritates us and so we use a little different weight on the scale when dishing out our love or care?
Maybe the one who can do something for us gets a better weight on our scale. What about the one who goes so far as to persecute us? How do they rate with us? But God looks on every person with love and mercy. He calls us to do the same.
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse” writes the apostle Paul .
Romans 12:14
Can anyone see those scales hidden in our hearts?
Proverbs 20:10-11 gives us some insight:
“Diverse weights and diverse measures,
they are both alike an abomination to the Lord.“
“Even a child is known by his deeds,
By whether what he does is pure and right”
It is no secret when we weigh one person differently from another. It cannot be hidden.
I regularly check my scales and ask myself if I am discriminating by using a false balance.
A just weight is God’s delight!
